Meteora is a complex of Eastern Orthodox monasteries built on natural sandstone pillars and hills in Thessaly, Greece. The monasteries are built on top of the pillars and are accessible only by climbing steep steps cut into the rock or by taking a lift. The name "Meteora" means "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above." The monasteries were built by monks in the 14th and 16th centuries and are considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are a popular tourist destination and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
